Stiegl. It sounds like an 80s movie villain. Toting a machine gun, platinum blonde, shoulder length hair and an evil grimace, all the while giving away his master plan when has the hero right where he wants him (why don’t they ever just kill them when they have the chance?). The Austrians didn’t want the Germans to have all the glory when it came to lagers and this beer is testament to their attempt to do it differently, to do it better. It has a honey aroma with some bready graininess and it delivers to taste. Sweet honey and malts dominate, this beer really is the definition of “bready”, there’s a light hoppiness to be found and an overarching bitterness tying it all together and bringing it in line with a classic pilsner or, perhaps with the sweetness, more like a helles. It’s the kind of beer that you can imagine swigging in bierhall while rowdily singing and dancing along to music. Lederhosen not included.
