Having the Yeastie Boys as our September Brewery of the Month was a no-brainer; we love these guys. Who wouldn't? Co-Founder, Stu McKinlay, is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, the beer is amazing and there's no need to Sleep 'till Brooklyn (get ready for more of these) because we can now get some of New Zealand's finest beers right here in the UK.
Yeastie Boys, spearheaded by founders Mr. McKinlay and Sam Possenniskie, broke onto the New Zealand craft beer scene in 2008. They were quick to Make Some Noise when their Pot Kettle Black Porter won multiple awards in 2009. Quickly establishing themselves as the benchmark for New Zealand craft beer they've now turned their attention to a more Intergalactic (seriously, only a couple more) distribution by way of the New Zealand Craft Beer Collective in order to get more of their beer--as fresh as possible--into the UK.
Even though the beer is treated with the utmost respect and sent chilled for its entire 12,000-mile journey, the other side of the world is still pretty far. To shorten the distance Yeastie Boys decided to get their Body Movin' and started brewing the Gunnamatta, Pot Kettle Black and Digital IPA on the kits in some of the UK's leading breweries. That means that we get the freshest, most-delicious, Kiwi goodness possible. Surely that'll make you want to Shake Your Rump (ok, that's it.)
You don't become one of New Zealand's leading breweries by playing it safe. While Yeastie Boys is always churning out high-quality beers it's their innovative spirit that's creating waves up here on the top of the world.
Take, for example, the Hellzapoppin'; this hot smoked IPA features smoked malts, Peach Bhut and Fatalii chilis as well as Nelson Sauvin and Rakau hops. Winning the award for best chili beer at the Australasian Mr. Chili Awards, this beer has an interesting dynamic and is a welcome change to the standard IPA. It's got a nice, spicy kick too!
We love the Cloudbuster Saison Moderne as well. Fermented with a classic saison yeast, this not-so-traditional saison has been finished off with Nelson Sauvin and Japanese Sorachi hops as well as a bit of New Zealand Wakatu on top of a complex malt bill. It makes for an interesting session, that's for sure.
As our Brewery of the Month, we've put together an exciting case of all the aforementioned Yeastie Boys beers as well as a couple of the White Noise wheat ales and the xeRRex Smoked Golden Ale. We're stoked to have them in our range and think you'll be equally stoked to have What'cha Want (sorry, I guess I lied) in your house.
If you're excited about the arrival of our friends from New Zealand, we've got several more breweries that represent the Southern Hemisphere. We'll introduce them properly in the future but, for now, please welcome Tuatara Brewing Co., 8 Wired Brewing Co., Renaissance Brewing, and Three Boys Brewery to the Beer Hawk range. These breweries all prove why New Zealand craft beer is highly-regarded the world over and why we're lucky that the New Zealand Craft Beer Collective has finally made their way here.
