Our guide to Belgian beers !

Curious to learn more about beers brewed in the Kingdom of Belgium? Discover the rich brewing heritage of this iconic beer-producing country, along with a selection of popular and lesser-known Belgian beers available at PerfectDraft.

A brief history of Belgian beer

Belgian brewing dates back to 805 AD. By the 11th century, abbeys such as Affligem—now owned by the Heineken Group—were central to beer production. Early Belgian beer was primarily brewed by monks and was often preferred over tap water due to its purity. The boiling process in brewing eliminated harmful bacteria, making it a safer option to drink. Monastic beers were also popular because they were free, enhancing their reputation.

By the 14th century, Belgium experienced economic growth that spurred beer production outside religious institutions. Taverns multiplied across the kingdom, and growing competition between breweries led to continual improvements in quality. Over the centuries, Belgium distinguished itself with iconic beer styles such as Trappist, Abbey, Tripel, and Lambic—all of which you can explore through the PerfectDraft range.

Belgian beers can be grouped by fermentation type. Low-fermentation beers include table beers, typically under 1.5% ABV and packaged in large 75 cl bottles. Pilsners are another example, known for their light colour and smooth taste. Popular brands like Jupiler, Maes, and Stella Artois are widely enjoyed in Belgium and beyond.

Abbey beers, often stronger and more characterful, are a hallmark of Belgian brewing. Well-known examples include Leffe and Grimbergen, with ABVs ranging from 5% to 8%. Trappist beers are a special category, brewed exclusively within Trappist monasteries and held to strict standards of authenticity and quality.

The ‘Dubbel’ is a classic brown beer with a deep, rich hue, while Tripel and Quadrupel styles are stronger still, offering bold, complex flavours. You'll also find refreshing Belgian white beers (witbier) and amber ales in our selection. Don't miss the uniquely Belgian Lambic, a spontaneously fermented beer aged between three months and three years—available on draught and occasionally in PerfectDraft kegs.
