Darcy – Thornbridge ESB Beer

Thornbridge Brewery

Founded in 2005, British craft brewery Thornbridge is widely regarded as one of the best breweries in the UK. In its early days, the brewery focused on cask ales, fermenting and serving its beers directly from traditional wooden casks. Today, its bottled range features only the finest recipes developed from these original brews.

While Thornbridge remains faithful to traditional brewing methods, innovation is at the core of its philosophy, alongside passion and expertise. By using carefully selected ingredients — premium hops, malts, yeast, and pure water — the brewery consistently delivers high-quality craft beers across a wide variety of styles.

From IPAs and stouts to sours, lagers, and classic ales, Thornbridge combines tradition with modern brewing technology to create distinctive and award-winning beers that appeal to craft beer enthusiasts worldwide.

ESB Beer Style

ESB stands for Extra Special Bitter, a traditional British Pale Ale known for its perfect balance between hop bitterness and rich malt character. This classic English beer style typically offers earthy and herbaceous hop notes complemented by smooth, biscuity malts and subtle fruity esters from the yeast.

Well-rounded and flavourful, ESB beers are appreciated for their complexity, drinkability, and refined bitterness, making them a staple of British brewing heritage.

Darcy

With Darcy, Thornbridge showcases its mastery of the ESB style using high-quality British ingredients. This beautifully crafted beer pours a magnificent copper colour, topped with a fine beige head typical of traditional English ales.

On the nose, Darcy reveals inviting aromas of toasted cereals, caramel, and freshly baked bread. A gentle sweetness emerges, accompanied by fruity hints reminiscent of orange marmalade and red berry jam. English hops, grown in the plains of Kent, add classic herbaceous and earthy notes shaped by the British terroir.

On the palate, the smooth and balanced attack highlights complex malt flavours of caramel, toast, and light smokiness. The rounded body then gives way to elegant hop notes with grassy and piney nuances. As the tasting progresses, the bitterness gradually intensifies, leaving a dry, fruity finish that lingers pleasantly on the palate.

Food Pairing

ESB-style beers like Darcy pair perfectly with grilled chicken, traditional English cheeses, and classic fish and chips. Serve between 8 and 10°C in a tulip or pint glass to fully appreciate its aromas and flavour profile.
