Tiny Rebel: from garage to global recognition
Located in South Wales, between Ireland and England, Newport is a city of around 150,000 people known for its bridges, nightlife, and homegrown gem — Tiny Rebel Brewery. Though the youngest brewery in Wales, Tiny Rebel is the only one to have won bronze, silver, and gold medals at the World Beer Championships.
It all started when two friends, Gazz and Brad, passionate about craft beer, began brewing in a garage. Gazz passed on his brewing knowledge to Brad, and together they developed recipes and a vision. Looking for a name that embodied fun, creativity, rebellion, and respect for the environment, they settled on Tiny Rebel, linking urban culture, graffiti, and sustainable brewing values.
After two years of testing and perfecting their craft, they launched two beers: FUBAR — a floral, malty golden ale — and Urban IPA, a hoppy, top-fermented beer with notes of grapefruit and caramel. These were quickly embraced by local bars in Cardiff. In 2012, the brewery had a production capacity of 800 hectolitres. Just a year later, they released their strongest beer, NP10, a Belgian Strong Ale, and launched the Tiny Rebel online shop. That same year, they won gold, silver, and bronze at the Great Welsh Beer and Cider Festival — a first in the event’s history.
In 2013, Tiny Rebel opened its first bar in central Cardiff, the city’s largest beer bar at the time. Their beers were already being exported to eight countries, and annual production had risen to 3,000 hectolitres. Growth continued with new beers, brewing titles, and expanded facilities — eventually outgrowing their original site.
Scaling up for success
In January 2017, Tiny Rebel opened its new brewery, officially launched in July, with a production capacity of 10,000 hectolitres per year. Investments followed: advanced packaging systems, kegging equipment, and a full canning line — a switch from glass bottles to cans for better aroma preservation, quicker chilling, and easier storage. Rapid growth led to acquiring additional space across the street for further expansion.
