The label of Mahou Cinco Estrellas is a masterclass in simplicity. Its bold red backdrop and five stars have become instantly recognisable, not just as a beer but as an icon of Spanish life. Taken as a whole, it reflects what Mahou has done for more than 135 years: craft a beer that feels timeless, authentic and deeply woven into Madrid’s culture. Look closer, and the clean lines, uncluttered type, and confident colour palette tell their own story – this is a beer with roots in history, sport, and the everyday ritual of ordering a perfectly poured caña.
Pour a caña
When Spaniards order a beer, they order a ‘caña’. Mahou’s masterly poured ‘cañas’ not only to ensure the beer can be enjoyed to the fullest, they are also an icon of Spanish lifestyle. Mahou is now serving in your home.
Mahou by name
Mahou is a French name from Lorraine in eastern France. Casimiro Mahou was an entrepreneur, but it was his children who founded Hijos de Casimiro Mahou. Casimiro Mahou García was also one of the founders of Madrid's Association of Beer Producers in 1922.
'Five-star' history
In 1969, Mahou's especial beer is renamed “Mahou Cinco Estrellas” (which translates to ‘Mahou Five Stars’), introducing the name that is to be associated with its characteristic flavour.
A sporting history
Mahou first sponsored a sports club in 1909, the Sportif Club, Madrid. Since then, it's moved onto even bigger things. Mahou has now been involved with Real Madrid for more than a century and the association continues to this day. It has the serving rights at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
'Five star' taste
Mahou is a lager with a characteristic body, modest bitterness, and intense yet refreshing taste. It is a full-bodied lager with a glossy appearance, a golden colour, and a creamy and textured foam. There's a slightly fruity and fresh aroma of banana, apple and floral notes of hops while drinking. In the mouth, meanwhile, there's a strong and consistent body and a well-balanced, moderate bitterness with slight acidity.
135 years of history
Mahou’s first brewery was opened at 29 Calle de Amaniel, Madrid, in 1890 by Casimiro Mahou’s widow and her sons, brewing their first beer a year later. People would drink beer on the terrace after work. Over seven generations, they have kept this passion for beer alive, creating exceptional varieties that capture the Spanish way of life.
