This drink has had several names over the centuries. One of the first name for beer before is sikaru. This Akkadian word from ancient Mesopotamia can be translated as liquid bread. It is also a reference to the fortuitous manufacture of this drink. Indeed, a Sumerian having forgotten his barley bread in water, the water turned into beer.

It should be noted that this word has various etymologies, derived from Dutch and Germanic languages. Among the terms often noted are bera (from Old Germanic Franconian) and Dutch bier (which may derive from Latin biber, meaning drink).
In France, in the Middle Ages, the word beer became popular in the Kingdom from 1435, thanks to King Charles VII's decree to regulate the sale of this drink in the kingdom.
