When a new keg comes in, it’s unbelievable,’ Anees tells The Taproom from his splendidly named Beerhoose in Dunfermline. ‘You can feel the customers’ excitement. They’ll come in and try a bit on the machines we have set up. They always look forward to a new release.’
When Anees started stocking PerfectDraft around six years ago, it was humble stuff, with only a few kegs. ‘I was doing some research into it, then one of my good friends, a neighbour called Gerry, was building a mancave during lockdown and had a PerfectDraft machine. So we put our heads together and decided to go all in.’

 
It was between Gerry, a retired engineer, and Anees that they came up with the name Beerhoose. And once Anees’ son, Owen, turned 18, he too got involved in the business.
The Beerhoose sits on a busy road in a fast-growing city, the PerfectDraft branding clear and bright. ‘It’s a different experience when they come in,’ says Anees. ‘Our store is unique because we only sell beer, and the customers know they get all the brands PerfectDraft offers.’
This stock choice has been deliberate from day one. ‘We always try to keep the full range rather than just the top sellers. So anybody who comes into the shop, whether they are looking for a non-alcoholic or something that’s not a very popular brand, it’s still there for them.
Anees has set up a range of machines so customers can try a ‘wee’ glass of a beer of something different.
‘We put on newer kegs so people can come and try a sample, and then they can choose.’ Anees has also decided to stock some of the beers in bottles so curious drinkers can try before they buy a keg.
And of course, they ask for advice: ‘We always share our experience with the different beers, especially brands they’re not familiar with. But when we have new kegs coming in, there’s always a buzz.’ 

Tennent’s has long been a staple, of course, but the Oktoberfest beers always cause a stir. ‘Most customers wait for it. It’s a big drop.’ Chilled fridges are part of the promise too. ‘We invested in fridges so the customers come in, they have chilled beer. They can take it home and straight away they can drink it.’

COMMUNITY ON TAP
The Beerhoose is a genuine family effort. ‘I work side-by-side with my son Owen; we both run the shop. He enjoys it and he knows the customers as well as I do,’ says Anees. ‘He’s now 21 and learning as he goes along, but he knows a lot about beer as well. But we learn from each other.’
Community, as we hear from other PerfectDraft community stores, is everything here. ‘Our customers have been very loyal to us from the beginning,’ says Anees. ‘Over time, we have become friends with many of them, and we know them, and some of them come from far away, just to see the selection.

Gerry, who nudged the idea along, is still part of it, too. ‘Gerry has been a huge part of our journey from the beginning; he was helping us during the start-up process, and he’s a huge part of our journey still.’
Anees certainly sees it as a journey. ‘The shop is always under construction. We’re always doing a little bit at a time, trying to improve where we can.’ A new website is testament to that.
What hasn’t changed is the heart of The Beerhoose. ‘We’re all in it,’ says Anees. ‘From the beginning, our customers have been very loyal. They come in and they try different beer. We talk about it, and they keep coming back to us.
