When was beer first made ?
This drink was not invented, but rather came about by chance. In Mesopotamia, the Sumerians were already using cereals and barley to produce bread, which they then stored. As a result, these loaves were very hard. To eat them with a meal, it was therefore essential to soak them in heated water, which had the effect of softening them.
According to a clay tablet discovered in Uruk, this was an "accident". A Sumerian would have left his bread for longer. Fermentation turned the liquid into beer.
This "invention" dates back to 8000 BC in Mesopotamia, a region essentially corresponding to Iraq.
The Mesopotamians actually named this drink with a direct reference to this invention, calling it Sikaru, which means liquid bread. This expression then spread to other parts of Asia and around the world. Learn even more things on PerfectDraft's website, such as the best beer brands.
