Its origin is rather accidental. So we'll call it more of a discovery, the fruit of chance and, for some, an intervention of the Gods!
In fact, the first beer is thought to date back to 6000 BC, in Mesopotamia. This is attested to by a tablet found in Uruk, in southern Iraq. The inhabitants of this region, the Sumerians, used to produce a very hard bread containing barley. Before eating it, it was soaked in heated water.
However, one day, a Sumerian failed to remove his bread, which then transformed the water into beer, during a fermentation process and under the action of natural yeasts.
The language of the region, Akkadian, gives this drink its name, in direct reference to this chance "invention". The term used is sikaru, which can be translated as liquid bread. This name then spread to the surrounding regions.
