In ancient Egyptian times, beer was considered a drink of divine origin! Perhaps the Gods gave chance a helping hand by helping mankind to create this drink.
According to a clay tablet at Uruk (in southern Iraq), this was more of a discovery than an invention. An inhabitant of this region of Mesopotamia is said to have left a barley-based dry bread in water for longer than usual, to soften it! The Mesopotamians used to soak their stored bread in water to make it easier to eat. The natural yeasts then acted and transformed this mixture of cereals and water into beer !
The language of Mesopotamia, Akkadian, actually named the very first beer. Thus, the Sumerians referred to liquid bread or sikaru to designate this drink. This name has since spread to other countries.
