Our Butterbeer Recipe

Butterscotch beer, made famous by the world’s most famous wizarding saga, is increasingly piquing the curiosity of beer lovers.

Its taste may surprise traditional beer drinkers, as its ingredients are quite unusual. With butter, milk, and even cinnamon in the mix, butterscotch beer is far from the classic flavors of hops and malt.

So, what does it actually taste like? If you’re eager to find out, follow our easy butter beer recipe—you’ll see, it’s not complicated!

How to Make Butter Beer

To prepare butter beer, set aside 30 minutes for preparation and 20 minutes for cooking.

Recipe for 6 servings:

Ingredients:

  • 3 bottles of 33cl beer or beer from a keg of Leffe Brune
  • 60g butter
  • 120g brown sugar
  • 15cl milk
  • Whipped cream
  • Vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions:

1. Melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat. Cutting it into small pieces can speed up the process.

2. Add the brown sugar and mix until smooth.

3. Stir in the milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon, ensuring the ingredients are well combined.

4. Pour in the beer. If you prefer an alcohol-free version, heat the mixture over medium heat to allow the alcohol to evaporate.

5. Serve your butter beer in a beer glass and top it with a generous layer of whipped cream.

Which Beer Should You Use for Butter Beer?

The traditional butter beer recipe can be made with non-alcoholic beer, but it also works well with a classic lager or amber beer.

For the best results, choose a beer with caramel, malt, and cereal notes to complement the other ingredients and achieve a well-balanced butter beer. We recommend:

  • Bockbier from the Dutch brewery Hertog Jan
  • Leffe Brune
  • Kwak Ambrée

These beers have the ideal characteristics and rich aromas to enhance the taste of your butter beer.

Avoid beers that are overly hoppy or bitter, as they can create an unpleasant taste. Also, steer clear of sweet or fruity beers like Lambic or sweet Tripels, as their high sugar content combined with the butter and sugar in the recipe may be overwhelming.

Now you have everything you need to make your own butter beer! And if you're still hesitant, you can always try one of our delicious beer cocktails instead.
