Pregnancy is a challenging time for expectant mothers. While the anticipation of a happy event is truly heartwarming, it also brings with it a series of necessary precautions. During these nine months, it is recommended that pregnant women avoid consuming raw or undercooked foods such as meat, fish, cold cuts, or certain cheeses. Above all, smoking and drinking alcohol must be stopped entirely.
For women who enjoy beer, this can be a real dilemma. Fortunately, the brewing market has evolved in recent years, offering a growing selection of beers labeled as “non-alcoholic.” This leads to many questions—chief among them: can alcohol-free beer be a safe and satisfying alternative during pregnancy?
The dangers of alcohol during pregnancy

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can result in serious complications for the fetus. Alcohol consumption may lead to growth retardation, physical malformations, damage to the nervous system, and in the most severe cases, fetal alcohol syndrome.
In France, alcohol consumption during pregnancy remains the leading cause of non-genetic mental disability in children. To date, no study has established a threshold for safe alcohol consumption during pregnancy. As a result, health authorities strongly advise complete abstinence from alcohol throughout pregnancy. Many mothers-to-be seek alternatives to enjoy the taste of beer without compromising their baby's health. In this context, non-alcoholic beer seems to offer a possible solution—but only if it is truly alcohol-free.
Are non-alcoholic beers really alcohol-free?
By definition, a non-alcoholic beer contains a low level of alcohol, the limit of which varies depending on national regulations. Under French law, a beer may be labeled “non-alcoholic” if it contains 1.2% alcohol by volume or less. While this is a small amount, it is not zero. Therefore, pregnant women should not assume that “non-alcoholic” means “completely alcohol-free.”
However, there are beers labeled 0.0% alcohol, indicating no detectable alcohol content. These offer a safer alternative for those wishing to eliminate alcohol entirely from their diet.
Can you drink alcohol-free beer during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Alcohol-free beer might seem like a viable alternative when trying to avoid alcohol completely. Indeed, the taste of alcohol-free beer is often comparable to that of traditional beer, and its alcohol content is typically very low. Nevertheless, there are several concerns to consider for pregnant women:
- Even if labeled “non-alcoholic,” the beer may still contain trace amounts of alcohol. These small amounts are not necessarily safe for the fetus.
- Most alcohol-free beers are produced through a dealcoholization process after fermentation. The beer initially contains alcohol, which is then removed via heating or vacuum techniques. These processes may leave trace levels of alcohol, even in 0.0% beers.
- To compensate for lost flavor during dealcoholization, many brewers add sugars to their brews. As a result, alcohol-free beers can contain up to twice the carbohydrate content of regular beers. This is particularly concerning for pregnant women with gestational diabetes.
For these reasons, it is not recommended for pregnant women to drink alcohol-free beer. The best course of action to protect your baby’s health is to avoid all forms of beer during pregnancy.
And while breastfeeding?

Unfortunately, the same caution applies during breastfeeding. Even after the baby is born, it is advised to refrain from drinking alcohol while nursing. Everything the mother consumes can pass into breast milk—including alcohol. Moreover, alcohol can negatively affect both milk production and the infant's development:
- Reduced milk supply
- Altered taste or smell of milk
- Lower milk intake by the baby
- Possible delays in motor development
- Disruption of the infant’s sleep patterns
Additionally, infants’ bodies are more sensitive to alcohol and less efficient at metabolizing toxins. If you want the best for your baby, it is advisable to avoid alcohol entirely while breastfeeding, including so-called non-alcoholic beer.
