The first beer appeared by the greatest of coincidences! Its origins date back to 6000 BC, in the region of Uruk. In Mesopotamia at the time, the inhabitants were accustomed to creating cakes and breads from cereals, particularly barley.
As they kept these foodstuffs for several days, they could dry out and become very hard, requiring them to be soaked in hot water. One day, a Sumerian forgot his bread in the water, and the fermentation process took place naturally. The water was transformed into beer thanks to the action of natural yeasts.
The very first word mentioning this drink is a direct reference to this fortuitous origin. Akkadian, the language used in this Mesopotamian region, thus named beer liquid bread. The term sikaru was used at the time to describe this drink. The term then spread to other parts of Asia.
