The first name for beer, in the Mesopotamian region, was Sikaru. This is how the Akkadian language defined the name of this drink. This can be translated as liquid bread, a logical meaning and consistent with the fortuitous invention of this drink.
In fact, the first beer came from bread left in water for too long. Fermentation and natural yeasts thus transformed this water into beer.
In France, beer went by many names, in particular gruit, cervoise, barley wine ... However, it was not until 1435 and an ordinance by the French king Charles VII that the drink was given the name beer in the Middle Ages.
This term has two different etymologies. The first originates from a Germanic language. Old Frankish refers to this drink with the word bera. Another origin, Dutch (the language spoken in the Netherlands), refers to a Germanic language, beuza (for effervescence) or to Latin (with the term biber meaning drink).
