Sometimes, for whatever reason, you might need to buy non-alcoholic beverages, but that doesn't mean you have to be stuck drinking orange juice! We here at Beer Hawk have hunted out some of the tastiest alcohol-free beer available so you can still enjoy the malty, hoppy goodness that we all love.
Beery history lesson time: Way back in Prohibition-era America, booze stronger than 0.5% was banned, so a number of breweries took to brewing very low alcohol beer in order to stay in business. These alcohol-free beers were legally classed as a 'cereal beverage' but the public nicknamed them "near beer", and the general consensus was that they were pretty rubbish!
Now, you might assume that all low alcohol beer is still thin and flavourless, but you'd be happily mistaken; in recent years alcohol-free beer has greatly improved in quality, and while it may not be quite as delicious as normal beer, you can now find a variety of enjoyable low alcohol beers.
Alcohol-free beer is generally 0.5% ABV or lower, with a crisp character and light, refreshing body. It also comes in a variety of styles; in addition to 'alkoholfrei' versions of classic German pilsners like Veltins, you can also find alcohol-free wheat beers from fantastic breweries such as Erdinger and Schneider Weisse, and for all of you hopheads there's even the option of BrewDog Nanny State, a bitter American-style pale ale which is packed full of Cascade, Columbus, Centennial, Simcoe and Amarillo hops.
