To be officially recognised as a Trappist beer, it must be brewed by monks belonging to the Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance. A strict set of rules governs their production. Trappist beers must be brewed within or in close proximity to a Trappist abbey, and part of the profits must be used for the maintenance of the monastery or charitable purposes. To guarantee authenticity, always look for the Authentic Trappist Product (ATP) logo.
