This December, we are heading to the renowned Danish craft brewery Amager Bryghus to discover their Brett Farmhouse Ale: Extravaganza.
Extravaganza – Amager Bryghus
About Amager brewery
Amager Bryghus is one of Denmark’s most successful microbreweries, standing out among the country’s 200 breweries for its international reach and award-winning beers. Based in a former Scientology church on the island of Amager, the brewery has been run by its two founders for over four years and has earned worldwide recognition.

The story began as a student project between friends Morten Valentin Lundsbak and Jacob Storm. While working on a physics and chemistry assignment about beer fermentation, they quickly developed a passion for brewing. Their early experiments soon led to their first Imperial Stout, Hr. Frederiksen, which was ranked among the 50 best beers in the world. Within just a few years, Amager Bryghus attracted global attention. Today, the brewery employs six people, exports 70% of its production, and distributes its craft beers to more than 35 countries.
Brett Farmhouse Ale style
According to Amager, Danish beer lovers often lean toward hazy IPAs and overlook Saison or Farmhouse Ales. That’s why the brewery embraced the challenge of brewing a Farmhouse-style beer for this year’s Beery Christmas.
Closely related to Saison, Farmhouse Ale has rustic roots, recalling the days when farm workers were partly paid in beer. Modern Farmhouse Ales still rely on wild yeasts like classic Saisons but are often enhanced with aromatic American hops such as Citra, Mosaic, and Amarillo, giving them tropical and citrus-forward aromas.
Extravaganza tasting notes
When poured, Extravaganza presents a hazy golden color with a lively effervescence and a lasting off-white head. The aroma opens with peach, pear, and apple, followed by hints of lime zest and straw, evoking a rustic countryside feel. You’ll also detect notes of white bread, cloves, and white pepper, adding spice and subtle acidity.
On the palate, the beer offers a balanced bitterness from American hops, delivering tropical fruit flavors complemented by Brett yeast-driven acidity. Swirling the beer enhances the spiced character of cloves and pepper. The finish is crisp, smooth, and champagne-like, leaving lingering impressions of apple and spice. True to its name, this Farmhouse Ale is an extravaganza of aromas and flavors.

Food pairing
Extravaganza pairs beautifully with light and flavorful dishes such as chicken, rabbit, fish, pasta, or fresh salads. Its balance of fruity, spicy, and dry notes makes it a versatile beer for food pairing.
