For many years, our neighbours in Luxembourg were known for their expertise in wheat beers and pilsners. Today, their brewing tradition has evolved to include a wider variety of specialty beers, such as low-alcohol and fruit-infused beers.
The history of Luxembourg beer
Luxembourg has shared a strong bond with beer for over 500 years. It all began in 1510 when Benedictine monks from the Altmunster Abbey started producing craft beer in large quantities in the Clausen district. In the mid-19th century, a German brewmaster introduced pilsner to Luxembourg, and this lightly carbonated beer quickly became the national favourite.
No discussion of Luxembourgish beer would be complete without mentioning the iconic ‘Brasserie du Luxembourg’. Founded in 1871 as the ‘Brasserie par actions de Diekirch’, it revived the brewing tradition of the Récollets monks, who had been crafting esteemed beer since the 18th century. Due to increasing demand and production, the brewery opened a new, industrial-scale facility in Diekirch in 1930 — the country's first of its kind.
In 2000, more than a century after its founding, the ‘Brasserie du Luxembourg’ merged with ‘Les Brasseries Réunies du Luxembourg’ to become the ‘Brasserie du Luxembourg Mousel-Diekirch’. In 2002, the brewery was acquired by brewing giant AB InBev, gaining access to global expertise and innovation.
In response to the modernisation of brewing techniques and the need for improved energy efficiency, the Mousel-Diekirch brewery began building a new production site in 2016 with an annual capacity of 200,000 hectolitres. Opened in 2019, this state-of-the-art brewery continues to produce five beer varieties under the Diekirch and Mousel brands.
