The origins of Golden Goose

For this new PerfectDraft release, Goose Island goes back to its roots, paying tribute to its very first beer recipe from 1988—now with a modern twist.

To trace the story of this beer, we go back to the 1980s when John Hall, founder of Goose Island Brewery, was traveling across Europe. During his journey, he sampled countless beers from different regions and styles. Inspired, he declared: “America deserves to have some really great beers like these too.” When he returned to Chicago, Hall had a clear vision: to brew exceptional American beers inspired by the best European styles. In 1988, he brewed the original Golden Goose at the Goose Island Clybourn Brewpub. Since then, Goose Island has grown into one of America’s most celebrated craft breweries, earning numerous awards—including six Great American Beer Festival medals for Goose Island IPA.

Now, the golden goose rises again. More than 30 years later, Goose Island has refined its original house lager recipe, using high-quality continental malts and hops to create an even better beer.

When served in a beer glass, Golden Goose shines with a brilliant blonde color and golden highlights, topped with a creamy white head. It offers intense aromas of malt, herbs, and cereal. On the palate, it delights with clean, complex malt flavors, delivering bold notes of crisp bread perfectly balanced by a subtly spicy hop finish.
